DeCesare, a proven recruiter with excellent game
management capabilities, is in his fourth season at
DePaul as the Blue Demons’ Associate Head Coach and his
seventh as a member of Jerry Wainwright’s staff.
Highlighting DeCesare’s tenure at DePaul was a 20-win
season and the program’s deepest postseason tournament
run since 1990 in 2006-07. The Blue Demons reached the
quarterfinals of the NIT with victories over Hofstra and
at Kansas State. DePaul also posted nine BIG EAST
Conference victories and beat three teams that were
ranked in the Top 25 on the date of their contest with
the Blue Demons.
In his first season with the Blue Demons, DeCesare
helped guide the youngest DePaul team in seven years as
the program joined the rugged BIG EAST Conference and
faced the eighth-toughest schedule in the nation.
Highlighting Decesare’s rookie campaign in the Windy
City were wins over NCAA Tournament teams California,
UAB, Seton Hall and BIG EAST Tournament champion
Syracuse. Last season he helped DePaul open conference
play with the program’s best league start ever.
During his three seasons at Richmond, DeCesare helped
the Spiders to 50 wins and berths in both the 2004 NCAA
Tournament and 2003 NIT.
Prior to joining the collegiate coaching ranks DeCesare
spent 16 seasons at the helm of St. Raymond’s High
School in the Bronx, where he compiled a 286-142 record
(a .668 winning percentage). In DeCesare’s first season
as head coach (1985-86), he led the Ravens to a 20-6
mark, including the New York Archdiocesan Championship.
Following that campaign, he built St. Raymond’s into a
national powerhouse as it rolled to four New York City
Championships and two state championships.
In addition, DeCesare was named New York State Coach of
the Year on three occasions. He was also selected the
1993 Kodak Boys Coach of the Year and received coach of
the year accolades from the New York Daily News, New
York Post and Newsday four times in his esteemed prep
coaching career.
The DeCesare era at St. Raymond’s produced more than 30
Division I basketball players including three McDonald’s
All-Americans - Majestic Mapp (Virginia), Julius Hodge
(N.C. State) and Kareem Reid (Arkansas).
A graduate of St. Raymond’s and Iona College (N.Y.),
DeCesare was the head coach for the East team at USA
Basketball’s 2002 Men’s Youth Development Festival. He
served as executive director of the New York Raven
Summer Basketball League (1996-02) while also serving as
Director of adidas ABCD Basketball Camp (1993-02).
